Take a Napa Wine Vacation
The Napa Valley boasts the most spectacular vineyards in the United States!
The Napa Valley was once home to thousands of Wappo Indians, even though there is almost no trace of an Indian population in the valley today. The word Napa comes from the Wappo dialect and means plenty. Visitors to Napa Valley wine country would agree that “Wappo” holds true today with “plenty” of wine for all discerning wine drinkers. In 1964 there were some 230 wineries in California and in 1998 there were about 840 in the state. Currently there are over 2000 wineries in the state of California.
The evolution of wine in California was considered by some, to be a wine revolution during the 1960s and 1970s. This revolution was largely initiated by professional men and women, such as investment bankers, professors, pilots, lawyers and doctors, all of whom had a passion for wine. California’s winemakers are among the most innovative and open to experimentation in the world.
Today, California produces over 17 million gallons of wine each year. The state offers something for every wine drinker. Mendocino County has the largest percentage of organic vineyards of any county in California. Over 20-percent of wine production here is organic.
